Grammar - Using "A" and "An"

We use "a" and "an" before singular nouns to mean one thing or person.

  • Use "a" before words that start with a consonant sound:
    • a book, a cat, a dog, a university (because "university" starts with a "y" sound)
  • Use "an" before words that start with a vowel sound (a, e, i, o, u):
    • an apple, an egg, an umbrella, an hour (because "hour" starts with a silent "h")

Examples:

I have a pencil.

She is eating an orange.

He is a teacher.

It took me an hour to finish.
