When to Use "There Is" and "There Are"

  1. There is: Use there is for one thing (singular).
    • Example: There is a tree in the forest.
    • Example: There is a bird on the branch.
  2. There are: Use there are for more than one thing (plural).
    • Example: There are many trees in the forest.
    • Example: There are birds in the sky.

Negative Forms

  1. There isn’t: Use for one thing (singular).
    • Example: There isn’t a river here.
  2. There aren’t: Use for more than one thing (plural).
    • Example: There aren’t any benches in the park.

Questions

  1. Is there…?: Use for one thing (singular).
    • Example: Is there a lake near your house?
  2. Are there…?: Use for more than one thing (plural).
    • Example: Are there any animals in the forest?

Using "Some" and "Any"

  1. Use some in positive sentences.
    • Example: There are some flowers in the garden.
  2. Use any in negative sentences and questions.
    • Example: There aren’t any flowers in the garden.
    • Example: Are there any flowers in the garden?
