Vocabulary - End vs. Final

'End' and 'final' are very similar, but these words usually play different grammatical roles in a sentence. Let's look at how to use them correctly.

  • End: We often use "end" as a noun to talk about the point where something stops or finishes (time or space). We can also use it as a verb to mean "to finish."
    • We stayed until the end of the concert because the music was amazing.
    • The movie didn't end the way I expected it to; it was a big surprise!

  • Final: We usually use "final" as an adjective. It describes something that is the last one in a series or something that cannot be changed (definitive).
    • This is your final chance to submit the homework before the deadline.
    • The final decision depends on the boss; we have to wait for her approval.
