Reading - Brazil’s Urban Revolution

Read the text and complete the activities below.

Many people think that art belongs only inside big buildings with quiet rooms. In Brazil, we disagree. Our cities, from the busy streets of São Paulo to the hills of Rio de Janeiro, are full of life and color. This is because of street art. Brazil is now one of the most important countries in the world for this type of expression.

In the past, street art was a "hidden" activity. Artists worked at night because they didn't have permission. Today, the government and companies pay artists to paint. These are called "commissioned murals." They help to revitalize old neighborhoods. For example, an old, grey building can become a beautiful masterpiece in just one week.

However, we still have a complex relationship with "pichação." Unlike "grafite," which uses many colors and shapes, pichação is usually a cryptic, black style. Some people see it as a crime, while others see it as the "voice of the invisible." One thing is certain: when you walk through a Brazilian city, the walls are never silent. They tell stories of the people, the culture, and the problems of our society.
