Reading - The Colors of the Stage

Read the text and complete the activities below.

In the time of William Shakespeare, colors were not just for decoration. In the theater, colors were a "silent language." Actors used colors to tell the audience about their characters without speaking.

For example, if an actor wore Gold clothes, the audience knew he was a King or a very rich man. If an actor wore White, it represented purity and peace. But be careful with Black! Black was the color of sadness, death, or a villain (a bad person).

We also use colors to describe our feelings today because of Shakespeare. He created the expression "the green-eyed monster" to describe jealousy (envy). So, when you are jealous, you are Green. When you are sad, you are Blue. When you are angry or in love, you are Red. Colors are like a secret code for our hearts!
