Grammar - Articles: A / An

Read the text and complete the activities below.

In English, we have two indefinite articles: A and An. We use them before singular, countable nouns when we are talking about one thing in general. Let's look at the rules!

1. When to use "A"
We use a before words that start with a consonant sound (letters like b, c, d, f, g, m, p, t, etc.).

  • I have a dog.
  • She is a teacher.
  • There is a book on the table.

2. When to use "An"
We use an before words that start with a vowel sound (the sounds of a, e, i, o, u).

  • I want an apple.
  • He is an actor.
  • It is an orange car.

3. Be Careful! (The Sound Rule)
Remember, the rule is about the sound of the word, not just the first letter!

  • It takes an hour. (We use "an" because the letter 'h' in 'hour' is silent, so it starts with an 'o' sound).
  • She goes to a university. (We use "a" because 'university' starts with a 'y' sound, like "you").
  • I have an MP3 player. (We use "an" because the letter 'M' is pronounced "em", starting with an 'e' sound).
