Reading - The Faces of Theater: Comedy and Tragedy

Have you ever seen the symbol of theater? It is two masks. One mask has a big smile; this is Comedy. The other mask is crying; this is Tragedy. These masks are very old. They come from Ancient Greece, more than 2,000 years ago!

In Ancient Greece, theater was a big competition. All the actors were men. They wore these masks so the audience in the back of the theater could see the character's emotions. If the mask was happy, the story was funny. If the mask was sad, the story was a tragedy. Today, we use these masks to represent all types of drama.
