When to
Use "There Is" and "There Are"
- There is: Use there is for one
thing (singular).
- Example: There is a tree in
the forest.
- Example: There is a bird on
the branch.
- There are: Use there are for more
than one thing (plural).
- Example: There are many trees
in the forest.
- Example: There are birds in
the sky.
Negative Forms
- There isn’t: Use for one thing (singular).
- Example: There isn’t a river
here.
- There aren’t: Use for more than one
thing (plural).
- Example: There aren’t any
benches in the park.
Questions
- Is there…?: Use for one thing (singular).
- Example: Is there a lake near
your house?
- Are there…?: Use for more than one
thing (plural).
- Example: Are there any animals
in the forest?
