Grammar - The Verb To Be (Present Simple)

Read the text and complete the activities below.

We use the Be verb to talk about names, ages, professions, feelings, and nationalities.

1. Affirmative Form

In English, the verb "to be" changes depending on the subject (the person). We use am, is, or are.

I am a teacher.
She is from Canada.
They are very happy today.
2. Negative Form

To make a negative sentence, simply add not after the verb. You can also use contractions (isn't / aren't).

I am not tired.
He is not (isn't) a doctor.
We are not (aren't) at school.
3. Interrogative Form (Questions)

To ask a question, we change the order: we put the verb before the subject.

Am I late?
Is she your friend?
Are they tired?
