Grammar - Present Simple - Asking Questions

GRAMMAR

1. Closed Questions (Yes/No Questions)

We use these questions to get a "yes" or "no" answer. We use the auxiliary verbs Do or Does.

  • Use Do with I, you, we, they.
    • Structure: Do + subject + verb?
    • Example: Do you like coffee? →Yes, I do. / No, I don't.
    • Example: Do they study English? → Yes, they do. / No, they don't.
  • Use Does with he, she, it.

    • Structure: Does + subject + verb?
    • Example: Does he play soccer? → Yes, he does. / No, he doesn't.
    • Example: Does she work here? → Yes, she does. / No, she doesn't.

Important! With Does, the main verb has NO -s.

  • Correct: Does she work?
  • Incorrect: Does she works?

2. Open Questions (Wh- Questions)

We use these questions to get information. They start with a question word (What, Where, When, Who, Why, How).

The structure is almost the same. Just add the question word at the beginning.

  • Structure: Wh- word + do/does + subject + verb?

    • Example: Where do you live? → I live in São Paulo.

    • Example: What does she eat for lunch? → She eats salad.

    • Example: When do they start school? → They start at 8 AM.
